HomeBoiler RepairsNo Heating or Hot Water

When your heating or hot water stops completely, it's stressful. But the problem could be something simple that's not your boiler at all, a blown fuse, a tripped reset button, a thermostat that's set wrong, a timer that's switched off, or a pump that's failed. Sometimes it's quick to fix. Sometimes it needs a replacement part Common across Nottingham, from Beeston to City Centre.

Either way, you need a proper diagnosis, not guesswork. We work through heating systems methodically. Is the boiler firing? Is the pump running?

Is the thermostat calling for heat? Is water circulating? We test each component and identify exactly what's stopped working. If it's the boiler, we either repair it or advise on replacement.

If it's something else, the pump, a valve, the thermostat, we fix it the same day if we can. If we need to order a part, we'll explain what's happening and when you'll have heat back. We operate across all Nottingham areas with typical response times of 2 hours for emergency calls. No call-out fee.

Our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan, which also includes £50 off all our services, discounts on parts, £80 off our appliance store, and priority service. If you're left without heating, we prioritise you.

Checklist Before You Call

⚠️

No heating and no hot water

The boiler isn't working at all. Check the pilot light is lit, the thermostat is set to a comfort temperature, and the timer (if fitted) allows heating now. If all these are OK, the boiler needs repair.

⚠️

Heating works but no hot water

The central heating turns on, but the tap water isn't hot. Could be a diverter valve stuck on heating (not hot water), or a fault in the hot water system. This is usually straightforward to fix.

⚠️

Hot water works but no heating

You can run hot water at the tap but no radiators get warm. Could be the boiler pump not circulating through the radiators, or air trapped in the system. Less common but fixable.

⚠️

Boiler lights up but doesn't stay on

The boiler fires up, then shuts down after a few seconds. This is a safety cut-off, something is wrong. It won't fix itself and needs a visit.

⚠️

Boiler showing a fault code

Modern boilers display error codes. Write it down and call us, the code tells us exactly what's wrong.

Troubleshooting Steps

1

Check the thermostat is set above room temperature

If the thermostat is set to 15°C and the room is already 16°C, the boiler won't fire. Dial it up to 22°C. If it then fires, the thermostat is fine.

2

Check the timer or programmer

If your heating is on a timer, confirm it's set to allow heating at this time of day. Timers get accidentally set to 'off' or the wrong time. Check the display, if unsure, switch it to 'on' manually.

3

Check the boiler pilot light

Is the small pilot flame lit on the boiler front? If not, try relighting it, instructions are on the boiler door. If it goes out again, stop and call us.

4

Check the pressure gauge

Most boilers have a pressure gauge. It should read 1-2 bar. If it's very low (under 1), try pressing the repressurise button or dial (usually on the front or underneath). If it won't hold pressure, you have a leak.

5

Try resetting the boiler

Some boilers have a reset button. Press it once and let the boiler restart. If it fires up and stays on, it was a temporary glitch. If it shuts down again, there's a recurring fault.

How We Diagnose the Problem

When nothing works, we work through this systematically:

1

Check controls: thermostat, timer, switches

We verify the thermostat and timer are set correctly and allow heating. A flat battery in the thermostat or a tripped switch might be the whole problem.

2

Test the boiler ignition and flame

Does it attempt to fire? Is there a spark or click? Does the gas ignite? We listen and feel for the ignition sequence. A fault here points to spark electrode, gas valve, or PCB problems.

3

Check the circulating pump

We feel for vibration and listen. If the pump isn't running, heating won't circulate. We'll bleed air from the system or confirm the pump needs replacement.

4

Confirm there's no air in the system

Air locks prevent circulation. We'll open radiator bleed valves to release air and allow water to flow.

5

Check for water leaks or low pressure

A leak drops system pressure and stops the boiler firing. We look under the boiler and radiators for drips, and check the pressure gauge.

6

Test hot water diverter valve

If you have hot water but no heating (or vice versa), the diverter valve might be stuck. We test and repair or replace it.

Common Causes of No Heating or Hot Water

Here are the most common reasons your heating stops:

Tripped boiler reset button

The boiler has a safety reset. If pressure dropped or the boiler overheated, it trips and won't fire until reset. We press it and check what caused the trip.

Low system pressure

A leak in pipes, radiator, or boiler drops pressure below the minimum (usually 1 bar). The boiler won't fire until pressure is restored. We find the leak and repressurise.

Air trapped in the system

After radiators are bled or pipes are worked on, air gets trapped. It locks the pump and stops circulation. We bleed the highest radiator to release air.

Thermostat battery flat

Wireless thermostats run on AA batteries that last 1-2 years. A flat battery stops the thermostat communicating with the boiler. We replace the battery.

Failed circulating pump

The pump moves hot water through radiators. If it fails, there's no heating circulation even if the boiler works. Pump replacement is typically £100-£200.

Diverter valve stuck on heating or domestic hot water

This valve sends hot water either to radiators or to your tap. If stuck, you get one but not the other. It usually needs replacement, costing £120-£250.

Upfront prices, no nasty surprises

We'll always tell you the cost before we start. These are typical price ranges, your exact quote depends on the job.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does no heating repair cost in Nottingham?
Simple fixes like resetting the boiler or repressurising cost £40-£60 across Nottingham and surrounding areas. Thermostat or timer faults cost £60-£120. Pump replacements cost £180-£300. Motorised valve faults cost £120-£200. We diagnose for free if we do the repair.
How long does no heating repair take?
Diagnosis takes 30-60 minutes. Simple fixes (pressure, thermostats, timers) take 30-60 minutes. Component replacements (pumps, valves, PCBs) take 1-3 hours. We carry common parts so most no-heating faults are fixed same-day, whether you're in City Centre, West Bridgford, or Beeston.
Why has my heating stopped working?
Common causes: low boiler pressure (below 1 bar), faulty thermostat or timer, broken pump, stuck motorised valve, boiler fault code, or frozen condensate pipe in winter. We'll diagnose systematically and fix it We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
My radiators are cold but the boiler is firing, what's wrong?
Usually a faulty pump (not circulating hot water), a stuck motorised valve (blocking flow to radiators), or severe sludge buildup in the system. We'll test the pump and valves and advise if the system needs flushing We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
Can I fix no heating myself?
Check boiler pressure (should be 1-1.5 bar) and repressurise if low. Check the thermostat is set high enough and timer is correct. Try resetting the boiler once. If none of that works, call us, component faults need a Gas Safe engineer We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
Is no heating an emergency in winter?
Yes, especially if you've got young children, elderly residents, or medical conditions. We prioritise no-heating callouts in winter and aim for 2-3 hour response. If it's freezing outside, don't wait, call us We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
What if only some radiators work?
That's not a no-heating fault, it's usually air in radiators (bleed them) or sludge buildup (powerflush needed). If one radiator is cold, it's not a boiler fault. If all radiators are cold, that's a boiler, pump, or valve fault We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
Will you come out in the evening for no heating?
Our phone lines are open Mon-Thurs 8:30am-6pm, Fri 9am-4pm. If you have no heating, call during these hours to book an emergency visit and we'll dispatch an engineer. We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
