HomeRadiators & HeatingThermostatic Valve Repair

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) control the temperature in each room by opening and closing based on the room temperature. When they work, they're brilliant, each room stays at the temperature you set, and you save energy. When they fail, rooms overheat or stay cold, and you've got no control. The most common faults are stuck pins (the valve won't open or close), failed thermostats (the sensor is broken), or seized valve bodies that leak Common across Nottingham, from Beeston to City Centre.

We repair or replace faulty TRVs every week across Nottingham. Often the valve body is fine and just the thermostatic head needs replacing, a 30-minute job. Sometimes the whole valve has seized and needs replacing. We carry common TRV heads and valves on the van so most jobs are done on the first visit.

All TRV repairs and replacements come with a 12-month guarantee. We'll test the valve fully to make sure it's controlling temperature properly before we leave.

Signs Your TRV Has Failed

⚠️

Radiator stays cold even when TRV is turned up

The pin inside the valve body is stuck closed. Even with the TRV head set to maximum, no water flows through. Common in TRVs that haven't been adjusted for months.

⚠️

Radiator stays hot even when TRV is turned down

The pin is stuck open or the thermostat has failed. Water flows continuously regardless of room temperature. The room overheats and wastes energy.

⚠️

Water leaking from the TRV

The valve body has corroded or the gland nut is loose. A slow drip from the valve means it needs tightening or replacement. Don't ignore it, it'll get worse.

⚠️

TRV head rattles or spins freely

The connection between the head and the valve body has stripped or worn. The head isn't controlling the valve pin anymore. Replace the head or the whole valve.

⚠️

Room temperature wildly inconsistent

The room is freezing one day and boiling the next with the TRV set the same. The thermostat sensor in the head is faulty and giving false readings. Replace the head.

How to Unstick a TRV Yourself

1

Remove the TRV head

Twist or unclip the TRV head to expose the valve pin underneath. The pin should stick up slightly from the valve body when nothing is pressing it down.

2

Check if the pin is stuck

Press the pin down with your finger. It should move freely and spring back when released. If it's stuck down or won't move, that's the problem.

3

Free the stuck pin

Spray WD-40 around the pin and work it up and down with pliers (gently). Often it'll free up after a few presses. Once it moves freely, refit the head and test it.

4

If it won't free, call us

If the pin is seized solid, forcing it risks cracking the valve body and flooding the room. Turn off the radiator at both ends and call us, we'll replace the valve safely.

How We Fix TRV Problems

We diagnose TRV faults quickly. Here's our process:

1

Remove the TRV head and inspect

We take off the head and check the pin movement. If the pin moves freely, the head is faulty. If the pin is stuck, the valve body is the problem.

2

Free stuck pins or replace

If the pin is lightly stuck, we'll free it with penetrating oil and work it until it moves smoothly. If it's seized solid or damaged, we replace the valve body.

3

Replace faulty TRV heads

If the thermostat in the head has failed, we fit a new head. We carry universal TRV heads that fit most UK valves. They're affordable and restore proper temperature control.

4

Replace the whole valve (if needed)

If the valve body is corroded or leaking, we drain the radiator, disconnect the valve, fit a new TRV body, and reconnect everything. Takes within 2 hours per valve.

5

Test and adjust

We set the TRV to different positions and check the radiator responds properly. We make sure the pin isn't sticking and the temperature control works as it should.

Common TRV Problems

Here's what we see most often with TRVs in Nottingham homes:

Pin stuck closed from lack of use

TRVs left on the same setting for months seize up, especially in summer when the heating is off. The pin gets stuck down and won't open when you need it. Work it regularly to prevent this.

Failed wax thermostat in the head

TRV heads use a wax capsule that expands and contracts with temperature. Over 10-15 years, the wax degrades and the head stops working accurately. Replacement heads are cheap.

Corroded valve body

Older TRVs corrode and seize completely. The pin won't move, or the valve body leaks. No amount of freeing it will work, the valve needs replacing.

Wrong TRV head fitted

Someone replaced the head with the wrong type and it doesn't engage the pin properly. The radiator is stuck on or off. We'll fit the correct head for the valve body.

TRV fitted backwards

TRVs have a flow direction. Fitted backwards, they restrict flow and the radiator won't heat properly. We see this regularly after DIY installations. We'll turn it around if accessible.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does TRV repair cost in Nottingham?
Replacing a TRV head costs £70-£95 across Nottingham and surrounding areas. Full valve body replacement is £90-£130. Freeing a stuck pin costs £50-£70. If you're replacing multiple TRVs in one visit, additional valves are cheaper (£60-£90 each).
How long does TRV replacement take?
Replacing a TRV head takes 20-30 minutes. Full valve body replacement takes within 2 hours including draining the radiator. Multiple TRVs in one visit take less time each, whether you're in City Centre, West Bridgford, or Beeston.
Can I just replace the TRV head or does the whole valve need changing?
If the valve body is sound and the pin moves freely, just replace the head. If the valve body is seized, corroded, or leaking, the whole valve needs replacing. We'll check and advise We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
My radiator won't turn off, is it the TRV?
Probably. The TRV pin is stuck open, or the thermostat head has failed. We'll test the valve to confirm and either free the pin or replace the head. Quick fix We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
Do TRVs actually save money?
Yes. TRVs let you set different temperatures in different rooms. You're not heating empty rooms or bedrooms to 22°C. Most households save 10-15% on heating bills by using TRVs properly We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
Can I fit a smart TRV head myself?
If your existing valve body works and has a standard fitting, yes, smart TRV heads screw on like normal ones. But if the pin is stuck or the valve is old and seized, call us to replace the valve first We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
Should every radiator have a TRV?
Almost every radiator, yes. Never fit a TRV in the same room as the main thermostat, the two will fight each other. At least one radiator in the house should have no TRV so there's always flow through the system We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
Why does my TRV keep leaking from the side?
The gland nut has worked loose, or the valve body is corroded. We'll try tightening the gland first, sometimes that stops the leak. If it's corroded, the valve needs replacing before it fails completely We cover all Nottingham areas including NG1, NG2, and NG9 postcodes.
